Variations on America [Charles Ives] | Semper Six, Woodwind Sextet

1 min read

At just 17 years old, a young Charles Ives (who was the son of a U.S. Army bandleader in the Civil War) composed Variations on America for organ in celebration of the Fourth of July in 1892. The melody throughout is "My Country, ‘Tis of Thee," which was in fact the national anthem at the time. This version, performed by Semper Six, was arranged by bass clarinetist Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Walko.

Our woodwind sextet features members Staff Sgt. Jennifer Zhou on flute, Sgt. 1st Class Erika Grimm on oboe, Staff Sgt. Dane Clark on clarinet, Staff Sgt. Randy Fultz on bassoon, Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Walko on bass clarinet, and Staff Sgt. Kaci Lewandowski on horn.
